Pick your tool and get the practice project
Newbie to Tech · Step 0 of 8 · about 5 minutes to read, 20–30 minutes to do Prices and plans were checked on each vendor's official page on 24 Oct 2026 (SGT). Prices change, so check again before you pay for anything.
Do this now (you can read the rest after)
- Pick one AI coding tool from the table below. Any of them is fine.
- Install it, and sign in.
- Switch it to "ask me first". The boxes below show where.
- Get the practice project. It is a tiny Daily Mood and Habit Tracker. Fork it, then clone it (steps below).
- Open
index.htmlby double-clicking it. It opens in your browser.
Check you did it: the tracker page is open in your browser. You can tap a mood and a habit. Refresh the page, and the taps are gone. That's normal. Saving comes in Step 3.
Why this matters
Every lesson in this track uses the same small project. You will read it, change it, save it with Git, put it online, and add a tiny AI helper. One project, built step by step, is easier than nine different ones.
1. Pick your tool
| Tool | Where it runs | Free or low-cost way to start | Good if you… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kiro (AWS) | Desktop app (an editor), command line, web | Kiro Free: $0/month, 50 credits. Pro is $20/month | want a written plan (a "spec") before any code |
| OpenAI Codex | ChatGPT desktop app, command line, editor add-on, web | ChatGPT Free: Codex in the desktop app, "subject to rollout". Go is $8/month. Plus is $20/month and adds the command line, editor add-on and web | already use ChatGPT |
| Claude Code (Anthropic) | Terminal, VS Code/JetBrains, desktop app, browser | No free plan includes it. Pro is $17/month billed yearly, or $20 monthly. Claude Academy courses are free | like careful, step-by-step work |
| Google Antigravity | Antigravity app, command line (agy), editor add-ons | Individual plan: $0/month with "basic weekly rate limits" | like a visual app where you comment on the plan |
About Google: Google moved free Gemini CLI users to Antigravity on 18 June 2026. So in this track, the Google option is Antigravity. Source: https://developers.googleblog.com/an-important-update-transitioning-gemini-cli-to-antigravity-cli
Can't decide? Pick a free one (Kiro, Antigravity, or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app). You can switch later. The lessons work the same way.
2. Install it
In your tool: install
- Kiro: download it from https://kiro.dev/downloads/ and sign in.
- Codex: on the Free or Go plan, use Codex inside the ChatGPT desktop app (https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/app). On Plus, you can also install the command-line version (https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/codex/cli).
- Claude Code: follow https://code.claude.com/docs/en/setup. You need a paid plan or a Claude Console account.
- Antigravity: download it from https://antigravity.google/download. Start with https://antigravity.google/docs/getting-started
You also need Git. It's free: https://git-scm.com/downloads. Not sure if you have it? Ask your tool: "Is Git installed on this computer? Don't install anything yet."
3. Switch to "ask me first"
AI tools can act fast. While you learn, make yours stop and ask before it changes files or runs commands.
In your tool: ask me first
- Kiro: turn on Supervised mode. (Autopilot is the default.)
- Codex: the usual Auto setting edits files and runs commands in your folder without asking. For "look, don't touch", pick read-only with
/permissions. Never pick "never ask" while learning.- Claude Code: use Manual mode. Newer versions may start in auto mode. Press Shift+Tab to switch.
- Antigravity: set the review policy to Request review, not Always proceed.
Step 2 explains these settings in more detail.
4. Get the practice project
The project lives at https://github.com/jazken/mood-habit-tracker. You make your own copy on GitHub. That copy is called a fork.
- Sign in at https://github.com (a free account is fine).
- Open https://github.com/jazken/mood-habit-tracker
- Click Fork.
- ⚠️ Look for a box called "Copy the
mainbranch only". Untick it. You want all the step branches. You'll use them as answer keys later. - Click Create fork.
Your copy now lives at https://github.com/YOUR-NAME/mood-habit-tracker.
Now put your copy on your computer. This is called cloning. Ask your tool:
I'm new. Please clone my GitHub repo into a new folder:
https://github.com/YOUR-NAME/mood-habit-tracker.git
Tell me in plain words what each command does before you run it.
Then open that folder.
Read each command, then approve it. It should run something like git clone … and then cd mood-habit-tracker.
5. Open the page
Find index.html in the folder and double-click it. It opens in your web browser. There's nothing to install and no "build" step.
What you'll see:
- a heading, Daily Mood and Habit Tracker,
- four mood buttons: Low, Okay, Good, Great,
- three habit buttons: Drink water, Take a walk, Read a page,
- a note: "Nothing is saved yet."
What's in the project
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
index.html | The whole app: the look (style), the page (HTML) and the actions (script) |
README.md | The instructions page you see on GitHub |
LICENSE | The MIT licence, which says you may copy and change it |
The project also has branches named step-1 to step-5. Each one is a finished version of a later stage. Think of them as answer keys. You don't need them yet.
Words from this step
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Repo | A project folder that Git tracks |
| Fork | Your own copy of someone's repo, on GitHub |
| Clone | Download a repo to your computer, with its history |
| Branch | A separate line of work in a repo |
main | The usual name for the main branch |
If something goes wrong
- The fork only has
main. You left the box ticked. That's OK for now. You can add the branches later from the Branches page, or delete the fork and fork again. GitHub's help: https://docs.github.com/en/pull-requests/collaborating-with-pull-requests/working-with-forks/fork-a-repo - Git isn't installed. Install it from https://git-scm.com/downloads, then try again.
- You can't clone. Click Code → Download ZIP on your fork for now. You'll need a real clone by Step 3.
